Don’t Hate!

“Hate” is a powerful and destructive term that affects people globally and locally. Here on the Hawaiian Islands where many groups of individuals from all over the world live and visit, the word “hate” has a deeply rooted idealism that grows everyday. This influential term can be heard and felt among the lowest income communities along with the leaders of the communities. Prevention of hate crimes is a concept used in many cities where hate crimes are more prevalent and detrimental to the local surrounding communities. [THESIS] To curb the spread and devastating effects of hate crimes, we should have television public service announcements that reflect the use of these crimes and the resulting consequence. [THESIS]

The history of hate crimes can be traced by to the introduction of cultures amongst each other. People tend to judge other person on the materials they have and their personality. Nation-wide hate crimes have taken root in areas where the number of crimes is prevalent and racial tension is high. The report from the FBI stated an, “…overall total of 7,489 hate crime incidents” (Anderson). However the report also mentioned that, “All states except for Hawaii reported at least one hate crime last year,” which I believe gives the impression that we don't have hate crimes here (Anderson). There are hate crimes in Hawaii especially due to the amount of cultures and ethnicities living and visiting here every year.

Here in Hawaii, many hate crimes are not reported and are dealt with in private due mainly to the small island idealism. The people know that the island is very small and the news about any issue can travel across the island in a relatively short time which causes concern for people who are involved with a controversial subject such as a hate crime. Many people found out recently the depth that hate crimes over-took the community due to the news about University of Hawaii Football Coach’s “hateful” remarks. University of Hawaii Football Coach, Greg McMackin was recently suspended due to his comments involving a homosexual slur which cost him a total of $160,000 in salary losses (Zahid). The amount of money he lost was substantial, however it was the message Coach McMackin carried that caused members of the community to become more aware about the effects of hateful crimes.

Hate crimes and its prevention start with the education of how such offenses affect other people in different ethnicities. Educating the youth about the lasting effects of hate crimes should be a priority in teaching the students to respect all cultures. Since many youth and adults watch television, the idea of a public service announcement will relay the message throughout the community. However this public service announcement should not be easily forgettable but rather implanted in the minds of the audience by showing them graphic images and the consequences of doing a hate crime. Watching something controversial that haunts the mind of the viewer gives an everlasting effect in which the person will talk about the subject with his or her friends and continue a link throughout society. The public service announcement by the Hawaii Meth Project tells the audience via television that real-world experience of taking the drug crystal meth and the effects it has on the user. The commercial contains highly graphic images about the users of crystal meth, which I believe is effective in placing the idea that drugs can negatively affect the user. This concept should be used with the idea of hate crimes to impose the negative effects on the youth and adults.

My personal experience with hate crimes occurred when I was going to high school here in Hawaii. In high school there are many groups of people in which there are various ethnicities however there are also groups of teens where there is only one ethnicity. I remember during lunch period there was shouting done by a group of Caucasian males toward a group of Chinese individuals. One white male said one of the Chinese males was talking about him behind his back in class about his low-test score. The Chinese male did not say anything even though the Caucasian male yelled at him calling him names. However as soon as the white male said a racial slur about the Chinese ethnicity, the other Chinese males ran toward him and started punching the white male. A fight broke out between the groups and in the end all the teens were suspended. If only they had the public service announcement educating them about the negative effects of hateful remarks then maybe the use of racial slurs would have not come about. This provided me with the knowledge that hate crimes were prevalent here and impacts my daily life.

Hate crimes cause hurtful and negative emotions in various communities around the world including in Hawaii. As the number of hate crimes increase due to the expand of all ethnicities, the implementation of educational programs such as a public service announcement will deter the use of hateful slurs and remarks. Hate crimes has affected various people in my community including myself through the experience I had in high school. In the future, the reduction in hate crimes depends on educating the public about the negative effects and learning that having respect for each other is a necessary component.

The First Amendment in the United States Bill of Rights states a powerful and direct law to the American citizens that the freedom of speech is something that should be respected and tolerated. Ward Churchill fury to the general public in his publication titled Globalization, ‘Some People Push Back’ On the Justice of Roosting Chickens. Churchill made a critical statement remarking on how the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks were “little Eichmanns,” which is a reference to Adolf Eichmann, a Nazi who played a major role in the killing of the Jews during the Second War World. [THESIS] The First Amendment right should apply to all American citizens including Ward Churchill whether their statements may be controversial. [THESIS]

The most basic component of all United States citizens’ rights is the freedom of expression and in this case the freedom of speech. The history of the First Amendment can be traced back with its creation during the development of the Bill of Rights nearly two hundred years ago. An article posted by the Cornell Law School on the First Amendment states that the right gives, “individuals to express themselves without interference or constraint by the government” (First). In relation to the comments Churchill stated on how 9/11 victims were “little Eichmanns” this right should still be upheld. The fact is that all citizens of the United States are entitled to the freedom to express any idea through speech is a basic rule written in law. Without controversial statements that would spark an idea in the audiences’ mind, new and innovative changes would not happen. Freedom of speech gives citizens the right on which nothing is physically needed, but rather just the imagination to create such an idea.

In his Globalization, ‘Some People Push Back’ On the Justice of Roosting Chickens publication, Churchill ignites rage and support toward his remarks about how the victims of 9/11 were tied into the injustice based on the policies of the United States government. Churchill’s serious comments on how the U.S. government and its supporters need a “…dose of their own medicine” should be reflected as the need to learn from past mistakes. Many of Churchill’s assertions blame the foundation that the “freedom- loving” people of the U.S. believe their country is based upon. Within his essay, he also describes many past situations in which the U.S. government did not learn from and therefore triggered its own results from the 9/11 attacks. The comparison of how many people were killed in the 9/11 attacks to the number of people killed due to the foreign policies of the U.S. is heavily focused in Churchill’s publication. The number of people killed by the U.S. in various countries outnumbers the people killed in the 9/11 attacks, however Churchill makes it clear that the terrorist attacks were not justified to solve government policy issues.

In an article written by Beverly Creamer who interprets the ecstatic environment during a speech given by Churchill at the Art Auditorium at the University of Hawai‘i, “Churchill indicts the United States…for what he called a century of wars and humanitarian abuses around the globe” (Creamer). Churchill also stated that he does not condone the attacks as the right thing to do to change the government policies, he states, “I did not advocate the events. One doesn't advocate for a volcano. One points to it and tries to make sense of it” (Creamer). Churchill remarks in his essay and speech were controversial and adversely noted upon however his right to freedom of speech should still be upheld. In a statement made by my classmate, Kristine Asato, she describes Churchill’s right of free speech, “Churchill says he was sending a message, that we should held accountable for our actions…the only reason why people are upset is because people died in action.” I agree entirely with this statement on the belief that the public is widely affected emotionally on the topic of death for a cause. Human emotion and the quick solution of censorship play a major role in the role Churchill and his remarks about the 9/11 victims affecting the general public’s views.

The backlash on Churchill’s career due to his remarks on the 9/11 victims created a belief that saying statements which are widely held in opposition will cause your loss of respect amongst the community. An article written by Matthew Beaudin on the step down of Churchill’s position as chairman of the Department of Ethic Studies at the University of Colorado shows the price you pay for the freedom to speak freely. Although the cost at which Churchill loss his position and salary his remarks on the unjust government policies which were bought in public view from the 9/11 attacks will far outlast the monetary effects. Many opponents of Churchill also believe that the resignation from his position will lead to the termination from the University of Colorado all together, “ ‘I think our actions helped lead to his resignation, and I hope our actions help lead to his termination,’ Lechowitt [President of University of Colorado’s College Republications] said” (Beaudin). Individuals and groups that want to change it for the worst see the cost of free speech on Churchill through his position in society and the movement.

Gregory Jenkins describes his view on the limitations that Churchill should face due to his profession as a college professor. In an online Laulima discussion titled, “Attack Ward Churchill” Jenkins writes, “Churchill, when acting in his professional role, must be subjected to the necessary rules and limitations of his free speech” which recognizes that professors are under question whenever they perform their duties in their profession. The fault in this idea is that professors provide guidance and knowledge to their students on any issue or topic that comes into question and Jenkins’s impression is that there should be the censorship of education. If we censor education and the professors that pass on their knowledge, then what is the overall motivation to go to school to learn in the first place, if everything is bias? Professors including Churchill should not feel pressured to conform to how others perceive themselves but instead be able to express their visions.

During last year’s spring semester, I took a course on business strategic management. Within the course I was told to have prepared a weekly assignment called “Celebration of Learning.” During our class meetings we would get into groups and discuss any topic however during one of the discussions a group member was frustrated at the assignment and began to state his opinion. He stated he disliked the assignment and began to question why it was necessary to complete it and the professor replied it was to give his students the freedom to express any issue they chose whether it dealt with the course or not. The student stated that where he grew up in South Korea, the school district he went to strictly implements the censorship of any topic discussed in public and he felt that the freedom of speech should be the same in America too. However the professor explained that the first amendment in the United States allows individuals to freely express their statements without the feeling of censorship. This links directly to how Churchill was treated by the public who opposed his ideas and punished him by his resignation from this chairman position and censoring his controversial ideas. Although I disagree with Churchill calling the victims of 9/11, “little Eichmanns” however I will defend his right to free express his statements.

In a recent article I found while search online by Jill Lawless from the Associated Press dealt with how the freedom of speech can also play a role my daily life. The article discussed how several friends were writing messages about bombing an airport because of their bad costumer service via Twitter, an online social network . Although the friends weren’t intending to do what they said via twitter the issue of freedom of speech sparked a debate whether or not it is acceptable to said those statements. This article also discusses how we should embrace the First Amendment since, “In China, where the Internet is restricted and Twitter is blocked, a woman was recently sentenced to a year in a labor camp for "disrupting social order" (Lawless). I feel society is immediately drawn toward ideas that are viewed as controversial to focus on eliminating them.

The First Amendment plays a major role in the various rights of all American citizens including Ward Churchill to freely express their ideas and values without prosecution from the government. Churchill describes the victims of 9/11 as “little Eichmanns” in his publication titled Globalization, ‘Some People Push Back’ On the Justice of Roosting Chickens. His description of the 9/11 victims is controversial and caused the loss of his position at the University of Colorado however the enlightenment he bought to the first amendment played a major role in the censorship issue. Churchill and all Americans should be able to freely express their ideas and values. The need to protect the freedom of speech of all American is an important aspect to keep the freedoms of society.

Is Honesty the Best Policy?

The issue of honesty is an important trait for the future leaders to create a better tomorrow. An alarming report by the Josephson Institute indicates that “78% [of teens] lied to a teacher (58% two or more times)” which reveals how tomorrow’s leaders are falsifying the knowledge they supposedly gain at school (Jarc). Many children and teens are developing a false sense of belief toward the acceptable nature of lying. As a member of the upcoming graduation class, honesty is one of the major elements that should be exhibited on a consistent basis. [THESIS] This speech will dissect the claims for and against lying and my evidence to prove how being honest is a factor that should be present in the leaders of tomorrow. [THESIS]

Tomorrow’s leaders should display various characteristics of including honesty. People want to follow and be guided by an honest leader since they know the trust factor will determine whether or not success will be achieved. There is a strong bond between the concept of lying and the honesty shown by an individual as lying implies a cause and the loss of honestly is the consequence. The term honesty derives from the morally upright and respectable character all of us should display, especially the future leaders of tomorrow. In the past, the seniority element played a major part in how a young individual exhibits honesty among his or her peers and elders. The young individual always shows respect by being honest toward an elder. However current statistics collected by various reputable institutes including the Josephson Institute of Ethics reveal the “moral decay” of today’s youth. In an article titled, “Character Study: A Critical Look at the Ethics of the Modern Teen” the study recognizes the character of modern teens and its connection to the adults’ responsibility to protect the ethical nature of teens (Character). The article states, “…when we see statistics like these it shows that the adults of today aren’t doing their job properly” which implies the confusion and the current loss of protecting the values of the future leaders of tomorrow (Character).

The blame of the loss of moral value and the increasing lying amongst teens can be easily placed with the media and the environment of the teen such as being with a divorced or single parent. Yet the “Character Study” article also points out that participating in the blame game usually exacerbates the conflict. Adults should listen to the teens and immediate provide them with the knowledge that lying will never achieve what they want to get out of themselves. The importance of honesty should be relayed from the adult to the teen to promote the direct relation of honesty and a successful leader.

One of the environments where the future leaders of tomorrow will be tested on their integrity and honesty factor is on the workforce. Employers and fellow employees have a sense of trust and honesty amongst each other due to their collaboration, which usually occurs on a daily basis. The exception to this rule is if the individual does not have daily contact with anybody on his or her job however the application and interview process would demonstrate any characteristics of honesty. In the Laulima discussion titled, “Honesty in Employment, White Lie and Honesty” Liza Nordin writes about her view of lying on the job through the job application process in which I agree on her stance. Liza writes, “It is not right or ethical to omit information that may cause an unfavorable light on your employment application. Employers have ways to check someone's background and the truth will come out” which uncovers the various methods employers can use to investigate an individual’s true character and honesty. Building a strong network with your co-workers is easier when they know they can trust you and can depend on you. However there are claims that lying is not so corrupt and severe to young individuals and there future roles as leaders and parents.

The claims that lying is not so critical and adverse are shown through many people lying on a daily basis. The argument against my stance is that everybody lies once and a while with some people lying more often then others. The belief that not all lies are equal is clearly stated in an article titled “All lies are not created equal: Professors, students take an honest look at lying” by Patrice Taddonio. In a personal experience I had with this idea of the acceptable nature of lying in a certain situation occurred when my former co-worker started to take money from the cash register. He didn't take a lot each time but over time it probably added to a considerable amount the company loss. During his first offense of lying to the manager he stated he had no idea about the loss money and soon after the disappearance of money stopped for a couple days. However after a few days money started to disappear and the manager decided to alarm the register to go off whenever money is taken out and one night the individual was caught taking money. He initially lied but later revealed he was in a financial crisis however my manager had zero tolerance for dishonestly and theft so he fired the person. The significance in my personal experience is the difference between situations amongst individuals can give the impression that lying and stretching the truth is acceptable however the flaw in this idea is the consequences that occur after repeated lying. An individual who lies once and gets away with it will most likely lie again with the confidence that he or she will be able to once more achieve the same result.

Honesty in tomorrow’s leaders and parents is an important issue and should be addressed openly to reveal the positive aspects of being honest. The nature of lying should not be blamed toward media or family environments but rather be discussed between the adult and the younger individual. Honesty in the workplace plays a critical factor in the success of a person and my classmate, Liza Nordin wrote in her response that employers have various ways of bringing out the true character in an employee. Although there are claims against the severity of lying, being honest is a factor that will alleviate a conflict. As we go on in our future endeavors I hope that we look back with the values including the concept of honesty and realize what a difference it has made in our selves as ethical individuals.

Is Honesty the Best Policy?

The issue of honesty is an important trait for the future leaders to create a better tomorrow. An alarming report by the Josephson Institute indicates that “78% [of teens] lied to a teacher (58% two or more times)” which reveals how tomorrow’s leaders are falsifying the knowledge they supposedly gain at school (Jarc). Many children and teens are developing a false sense of belief toward the acceptable nature of lying. As a member of the upcoming graduation class, honesty is one of the major elements that should be exhibited on a consistent basis. [THESIS] This speech will dissect the claims for and against lying and my evidence to prove how being honest is a factor that should be present in the leaders of tomorrow. [THESIS]

Tomorrow’s leaders should display various characteristics of including honesty. People want to follow and be guided by an honest leader since they know the trust factor will determine whether or not success will be achieved. There is a strong bond between the concept of lying and the honesty shown by an individual as lying implies a cause and the loss of honestly is the consequence. The term honesty derives from the morally upright and respectable character all of us should display, especially the future leaders of tomorrow. In the past, the seniority element played a major part in how a young individual exhibits honesty among his or her peers and elders. The young individual always shows respect by being honest toward an elder. However current statistics collected by various reputable institutes including the Josephson Institute of Ethics reveal the “moral decay” of today’s youth. In an article titled, “Character Study: A Critical Look at the Ethics of the Modern Teen” the study recognizes the character of modern teens and its connection to the adults’ responsibility to protect the ethical nature of teens (Character). The article states, “…when we see statistics like these it shows that the adults of today aren’t doing their job properly” which implies the confusion and the current loss of protecting the values of the future leaders of tomorrow (Character). The blame of the loss of moral value and the increasing lying amongst teens can be easily placed with the media and the environment of the teen such as being with a divorced or single parent. Yet the “Character Study” article also points out that participating in the blame game usually exacerbates the conflict. Adults should listen to the teens and immediate provide them with the knowledge that lying will never achieve what they want to get out of themselves. The importance of honesty should be relayed from the adult to the teen to promote the direct relation of honesty and a successful leader.

One of the environments where the future leaders of tomorrow will be tested on their integrity and honesty factor is on the workforce. Employers and fellow employees have a sense of trust and honesty amongst each other due to their collaboration, which usually occurs on a daily basis. The exception to this rule is if the individual does not have daily contact with anybody on his or her job however the application and interview process would demonstrate any characteristics of honesty. In the Laulima discussion titled, “Honesty in Employment, White Lie and Honesty” Liza Nordin writes about her view of lying on the job through the job application process in which I agree on her stance. Liza writes, “It is not right or ethical to omit information that may cause an unfavorable light on your employment application. Employers have ways to check someone's background and the truth will come out” which uncovers the various methods employers can use to investigate an individual’s true character and honesty. Building a strong network with your co-workers is easier when they know they can trust you and can depend on you. However there are claims that lying is not so corrupt and severe to young individuals and there future roles as leaders and parents.

Wait There’s More! - How Advertising Affects Our Lives

The impact of advertisements on our daily lives has created a new sense of idealism, which we base our individual decisions on. Advertisements took root in the use of televisions, posters, flyers, billboards and any type of media available. The economic impact of advertising generated a large amount of money through global industries and provided a foundation for products and services to reach any consumer. The main effect on society is how it influences us to buy a product over another, which manipulates our judgment. Many believe advertisements including commercials and paper ads are causing a negative effect on our lives and implore the use of controversial statements and claims to convince the purchaser to acquire the item or service. [THESIS] The statement, “In general, ads or commercials ultimately have a negative impact on our lives” is true and the reasoning for my judgment along with how ads affect society will be conversed. [THESIS]

POM Wonderful LLC has been supplying the public for nearly a decade with 100% pomegranate juice marketed under the brand, POM Wonderful Pomegranate Juice. In a video clip advertisement, I found while reading a New York Times online article last Thursday, a picture of a POM juice bottle appeared in an empty room covered in a gray background. A woman in about her 50s’ dressed in workout clothes, a red tank-top and shorts, sluggishly walked over to the bottle and picked it up subsequently drinking the bottle and quickly began to revert her age to about mid 20s’. After drinking the entire bottle the younger woman smiled and said, “New research offers further proof of the heart-healthy benefits of POM wonderful juice, so drink up to a longer, healthier heart!” Then she swiftly ran toward the gray background, which instantaneously changed into a brightly lit park scene filled with people exercising and smiling. The implication is that if I drink POM juice, I will literally become a younger more energetic person. This is a hasty generalization since the advertisement is basing the evidence that on the result of one average person, the woman in the video. Furthermore, another logical fallacy in this ad is a non sequitur since it does not necessarily follow that I will have the same consequence as the woman. Her age reduction is overly exaggerative and a product of film editing. The assumption that POM juice will regress your age can influence an individual in spending his or her money to produce results that are physically impossible. Due to the nature of POM juice’s claims in its advertising, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has cited several complaints against the company (Fredrix). POM Wonderful LLC has currently halted many commercials and other advertisements containing claims on the POM juice health benefits.

A statement made by Liza Nordin in the Laulima discussion, “Yes, Ads Have Negative Impact!” complements my findings that ads ultimately have an adverse effect on society. Nordin writes, “Advertising encourages the conspicuous consumption and materialism so prevalent in our modern society…” which revealed how it influences individuals to consume a product that they do not necessary need. Excessive promotion for products and services can directly affect the environment through marketing waste such as promotional paper goods. Advertisements also can affect the environment indirectly as the individual continues to buy more items and discards previously bought commodities. Nordin also describes her view of how advertising and materialism are linked together through the unnecessary need for more products. Gathering more products to satisfy the expectations of how you want others in society to view you as causes individuals to become a slave to the mass media marketing. Another issue related to Nordin’s quote is increasing debt problems, which people then run into financial troubles. However, the issue of advertising and its impact on our lives creates two sides toward the argument.

In the Laulima discussion, “No, Ads Don't Have a Negative Impact!” Gregory Jenkins writes how ads create an identity and lifestyle with what we buy as consumers. Jenkins states, “Advertising leading to society’s alignment with consumer brands is an endorsement of positive freedoms...” which is skewed based on the logically fallacy of ad populum. In Jenkins’s testimony on the positive effects of advertising, he is appealing to the emotions of the people by utilizing certain terms such as positive freedoms, which construct an idealistic barrier. The term freedom is associated with independence and an expression of uniqueness, however in his argument he asserts that ads build an identity to which we correlate with others. This can conceive limitations in how we express freedom since if we buy a certain product that others are not particularly fond of, we usually change it based on another’s opinion. Jenkins also implies that branding oneself is a typical thing we do to create our own identity. The formation of an identity through the brands we choose from advertisements limit our accessibility to others. If one identities with a higher monetary value brand such as a Ferrari automobile, he or she is more likely to have friends with similar tastes in expensive goods. Nonetheless, advertising does have some positive impacts on our lives.

The positive impacts of advertising are seen through its effects on the prices and variety of assorted goods and services. Advertising a product or service allows the seller to have a better chance of persuading a consumer to purchase, which generates revenue for the business to pay its employees. The concept of competition amongst various advertisements allows society additional choices therefore permitting more opportunities. Advertising is also a tool used by many consumers to judge which product stands out and performs more effectively. The type of advertisement that is often conveyed as a positive impact is informational advertising on health-related issues. An example is a public service announcement on the health benefits of quitting smoking, which offers information rather then marketing a certain product.

The statement, “In general, ads or commercials ultimately have a negative impact on our lives” is true and correlates with my findings. The effects on society are mainly seen in a negative direction since advertising can involve many logical fallacies such as the hasty generalizations and non-sequiturs. The POM juice advertisement previously discussed comprises of a hasty generalization and a non sequitur made by the content of the commercial. In spite of these negative attributions, ads do have a few positive acknowledgements for instance, the competition it creates among products and service, which generate favorable prices. However, these hopeful elements in advertisements do not outweigh the detrimental factors, which influence our lives. Advertisements promote a false reality and cause excessive waste in our society therefore negatively affecting our daily existence.

Nordin writes, “Advertising encourages the conspicuous consumption and materialism so prevalent in our modern society…” which reveals how it influences individuals to consume a product that they do not necessary need. Excessive promotion for products and services can directly affect the environment through marketing waste such as promotional paper goods. Advertisements also can affect the environment indirectly as the individual continues to buy more items and discards previously bought commodities. Nordin also describes her view of how advertising and materialism are linked together through the unnecessary need for more products. Gathering more products to satisfy the expectations of how you want others in society to view you can cause individuals to become a slave to the mass media marketing. Another issue related to Nordin’s quote is increasing debt problems, which people then run into financial troubles. However the issue of advertising and its impact on our lives creates two sides toward the argument.

In the Laulima discussion, “No, Ads Don't Have a Negative Impact!” Gregory Jenkins writes how ads create an identity and lifestyle with what we buy as consumers. Jenkins states, “Advertising leading to society’s alignment with consumer brands is an endorsement of positive freedoms...” which is skewed since it is based on the logically fallacy of ad populum. In Jenkin’s testimony on the positive effects of advertising, he is appealing to the emotions of people by utilizing certain terms such as positive freedoms, which construct an idealistic barrier. The term freedom is associated with independence and an expression of uniqueness, however in his argument he asserts that ads build an identity to which we correlate with others. This can conceive limitations in how we express freedom since if we buy a certain product that others are not particularly fond of, we usually change it based on another’s opinion. Jenkins also implies that branding oneself is a typical thing we do to create our own identity. The formation of an identity through the brands we choose from advertisements limit our accessibility to others. If one identifies with a higher monetary value brand such as a Ferrari automobile, he or she is more likely to have friends with similar tastes in expensive goods. Nonetheless, advertising does have some positive impacts on our lives.

The positive impact of advertising is seen through its effects on prices and variety of assorted goods and services. Advertising a product or service allows the seller to have a better chance of persuading a consumer to purchase, which generates revenue for the business to pay its employees. The concept of competition amongst various advertisements allows individuals additional choices therefore permitting more opportunities. Advertising is also a tool used by many consumers to judge which product stands out and performs more effectively. The type of advertisement can be conveyed, as a positive impact on us is informational advertising in health-related issues and products. An example is a public service announcement on the health benefits of quitting smoking, which offers information rather then marketing a certain product.

The statement, “In general, ads or commercials ultimately have a negative impact on our lives” has been proved true through my finding on its impacts on daily lives. The effects on society are mainly seen in a negative direction since advertising can involve many logical fallacies such as the hasty generalizations and non-sequiturs. The POM juice advertisement previously discussed comprises of a hasty generalization made by the content of the commercial. In spite of these negative attributions, ads do have a few positive acknowledgements for instance, the competition it creates among products and service, which influence prices. Advertisements initiate individuals to think beyond the product and give us choices that influence our lives on a daily basis.

Changing the “Female” Definition

The stereotypical role of the female gender has been greatly affected by many social changes and behavioral responses to those transformations within the past few decades. Society’s opening of its arms to the expansion of the female gender roles is changing how women can directly affect their surroundings. There is no longer a majority of females featured as “house-wives” but rather major players in the “movers and shakers” of their global community. This change can be attributed to a wide-variety of factors such as the progression of the job market and the behavioral adjustment of women to be more assertive toward the opposition they received in the past and present. Another issue that allowed the growth of women in different gender roles is the collapse of the limitations that were imposed on the female gender. [THESIS]The female gender role faces many challenges within various fields however the statement that “between adolescence and menopause, women experience trauma in adjusting to their gender roles” is inaccurate.[THESIS]

Mary Pipher’s book, Reviving Ophelia describes how society is poisoning the dreams and goals of pre-adolescent girls with the stereotypical view of the female gender role that declares females are limited to certain types of jobs and tasks. Pipher also asserts that many females must surrender to the narrow-minded definition of a female due to her experiences as a psychologist working with troubled children and teens. When females under go adolescence, Pipher writes, “girls may be losing their true selves in an effort to conform to what they believe society expects of them.” (Saplings, 429) Pipher also backs her statement in another text; “girls become ‘female impersonators’ who fit their whole selves into small, crowded places.” (Reviving, p.22) Both Pipher’s statements are based directly on her profession as a psychologist therefore she has very close contact with pre-adolescent females and she may have been too attached to the feelings of some of their females. This close contact could have affected her judgment and make her statements about society’s traumatic affect on pre-adolescent females a preconceived notion.

The use of the word trauma to describe the experience women between adolescence and menopause face in adjusting to their gender roles is excessive and mistaken. The definition of trauma in my prospective is a mental or physically event that causes the individual to no longer be effective in their surroundings. Women face different challenges when they enter a certain role in society however trauma is definitely not a factor in they're transition in the role. Females may need to adapt physically or mentally to a field they are going in to just like the male gender. In my personal experience, my friend tells me that when she was 14 years old and tried to play basketball with a bunch of male friends in a local league, she did not experience any feeling near a traumatic experience that Pipher emphasizes that pre adolescent girls feel society has faced upon them. Pipher’s view of trauma society places on girls is rather a gradual learning curve that comes along with age. Many females are not bound by the limitations that Pipher relates pre-adolescent girls to, just as my friend who still currently plays amongst men in various sport leagues and tournaments.

The female gender role is changing mainly due to the sociological changes that include the acceptance on asserting your own beliefs and values in your environment. Females have more acceptance in various roles in society since assertiveness and their determination to change stereotypical views is appreciated rather then frowned upon. The pressures females during pre-adolescence face is not based on society’s impressions on them but their wants and needs out of themselves. Stephen Sylvester writes in response to the causes and solutions of gender role trauma, “I believe that the best solution this problem is putting children in early childhood development classes to be more sociable, private schooling so that everyone is dressed the same which decreases the chances of peer pressure to dress a certain way.” Having children placed in a setting that limits individuality by having them dress a certain way does slightly decrease the chance of peer pressure but promotes one-sided idealism on the children. If a young girl is placed in a setting that limits individuality, the girl is more likely to feel socially limited. Children need to embrace the freedom of having to choose what they can wear even though they may feel imposed on by others because they at least have the chance to feel less restricted.

Pipher’s statement that, “between adolescence and menopause, women experience trauma in adjusting to their gender roles,” is imprecise since her idealism is many based off her predisposition with her patients and her incorrect use of the word, trauma. The female gender role continues to expand due to the changing global views. The original stereotypical views that were associated with the female gender are becoming extinct due to the changing influences females have on society.
